National Drug Policy 1998-2003

The National Drug Policy is the Government's five-year action plan for tobacco, alcohol, illicit and other drugs.
It spells out the Government's commitment to prevent and reduce drug-related harm for all New Zealanders through a balance of supply control and demand reduction strategies.
The policy emphasises the need for strong law enforcement (to reduce the demand for drugs), credible messages about drug-related harm (to reduce the demand for drugs), and effective health services (to manage any drug-related problems which do still occur).
It is an intersectoral policy which provides a framework for both government and non-government agencies to work together towards a common goal and a common set of national priorities.
