Tobacco Control Initiatives

There is a range of tobacco control activity in New Zealand. More information can be found on the public health initiatives and regulation page.

Ministry of Health and Tobacco Control

The Ministry of Health has traditionally been the key agency for policy development in the tobacco control area. It is involved in a large number of policy aspects relating to tobacco control. However, other government agencies also have roles including the Treasury, Te Puni Kokiri, Education, Customs and Youth Affairs.

Key strategic documents which have linkages with policy work in tobacco control include:

Clearing the Smoke: A five-year plan for tobacco control in New Zealand (2004-2009)
New Zealand Health Strategy (2000)
Child Health Strategy (1998)
National Drug Policy (2007-2012) (and its associated monitoring plan).
the series of reports which monitor the national health outcome targets relating to tobacco use.

Finally, the Ministry strives to ensure that its tobacco control activities are compatible with the current approach to tobacco control by the World Health Organization and the WHO Western Pacific Regional Action Plan on Tobacco or Health.
