Costs of Harmful Alcohol and Other Drug Use
This economic analysis by Business and Economic Research Limited (BERL) estimates the costs to society and government of harmful use of alcohol, illegal drugs and misused legal drugs. It does not include the costs of tobacco use.
The report also estimates the potential level of costs that are avoidable, and the social costs that arise from injuries that result from alcohol and other drug use.
The report was commissioned by the Ministry of Health and Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) to provide up-to-date cost estimates to inform policy development.
