Pictorial Health Warnings for Tobacco Products

To better inform people, smokers and non-smokers alike, of the health risks involved in smoking tobacco products Cabinet, on 30 October 2006, approved the drafting of regulations requiring pictorial health warnings on tobacco products sold in New Zealand. Review of the Evidence for Major Tobacco Control Interventions

This document was prepared to inform the development of the Ministry’s five-year plan for tobacco control. It summarises the findings of major reviews for major tobacco control interventions, and systematic reviews of economic evaluations for interventions that were either 'strongly recommended' or 'recommended'. Evidence based strategies for reducing smoking initiation, increasing smoking cessation, reducing exposure to second hand smoke, and other public health interventions are outlined.

The New Zealand Public Health Report: Enforcing the Law on Tobacco Sales to Minors

The Smoke-free Environments Act 1990 prohibits the sale of tobacco products to persons under 18 years of age. In September 1996, the Ministry of Health began co-ordinating a programme of controlled purchase operations (CPOs), using under-age volunteers, to identify retailers illegally selling tobacco products to minors.
