Tobacco Trends 2006: Monitoring Tobacco use in New Zealand (www.moh.govt.nz) (Dec 2006)

This publication provides robust estimates of the prevalence of tobacco use in New Zealand. These estimates are updated annually and trends are presented where possible. Estimates are broken down by gender, ethnic group, age group and smoker type.

Tobacco Facts (www.moh.govt.nz)

Tobacco Facts provides the latest adult and youth smoking prevalence data. Also provided is information regarding the quantity of tobacco products released in New Zealand. It includes brief points about the health effects of tobacco smoking and selected New Zealand information about youth smoking.

Tobacco Statistics (2000)

This Cancer Society publication brings together a wealth of information on tobacco and smoking from a range of agencies and data sources in New Zealand.

Attitudes Towards Environmental Tobacco Smoke (Jul 1999)

This 1999 survey looked at the incidence of workplace smoking restrictions and attitudes toward smoking. The survey analysed the views of 2698 people across New Zealand. The prime purpose was to obtain information which would assist the Ministry to provide the Government with information about changing public attitudes regarding protection against environmental tobacco smoke.

Taking the Pulse: The 1996/97 Health Survey (1999)

Ministry of Health: Wellington, 1999. This report presents an overview of the 1996/97 New Zealand Health Survey. The survey is a key component of the Ministry of Health's population health monitoring function.

New Zealand Drug Statistics 2001 (www.nzhis.govt.nz)

This report collates a diverse range of statistics relating to drugs and drug use in New Zealand. Its primary focus is on drugs used recreationally or due to dependence. It includes legal and illegal drugs.

Drugs in New Zealand National Survey (www.aphru.ac.nz) (1999)

This report summarises the results of a national survey of 5475 people aged between 15 and 45, conducted in 1998. They were interviewed about their use of alcohol, tobacco, cannabis and other drugs.

Drugs in New Zealand Comparison Surveys, 1990 and 1998 (www.aphru.ac.nz) (1999)

This report compares the results of regional surveys of drug use carried out in 1990 and 1998. In each survey, random samples of approximately 5000 people aged 15-45 from greater Auckland and the Bay of Plenty were interviewed about their use of alcohol, tobacco, cannabis and other drugs.

The Social Costs of Tobacco Use and Alcohol Misuse (Apr 1997)

This report was prepared for the Alcohol Advisory Council of New Zealand (ALAC), the Health Research Council of New Zealand (HRC) and the Public Health Commission (PHC) to bring together and extend the existing fragmented estimates of various aspects of the social consequences of tobacco use and alcohol misuse in New Zealand.

Environmental Tobacco Smoke Study (Jul 1996)

The general objective of this study was to measure a range of smoking attitudes and behaviours amongst adult New Zealanders aged 15 years and upwards. This is the third such reading, and its aim was to see whether an improving or deteriorating trend of smoking indicators was emerging since the first reading seven years ago.

Murray Laugesen. Cancer Society of New Zealand: Wellington, 1996. This book summarises what is known about how cigarette smoking shortens people's lives across New Zealand. A copy is held in the Ministry of Health's library.

Shaping Up: a Profile of New Zealanders' Patterns of Smoking, Drinking, Exercise and Body Mass Index (1995)

Ministry of Health: Wellington, 1995. Based on the results of the 1992-93 New Zealand Health Survey, this focuses on four variables that impact on health: tobacco, smoking, alcohol consumption, exercise and body mass index. A copy is held in the Ministry of Health's library and can be interloaned through your local public library.

Heart Health Behaviour of Adult New Zealanders (Nov 1989)

The general objective of this publication is to measure a range of heart health attitudes and behaviours amongst adult New Zealanders aged 15 years and upwards. The intended use of the survey is to assist with interventional education and communications and then to re-measure in the future to see whether an improving or deteriorating trend of heart health indicators is emerging.
